Search for Missing Mother of Savannah Guthrie Enters Fifth Day

The urgent search for Nancy Guthrie, mother of "Today" show host Savannah Guthrie, continues as authorities investigate a suspected abduction from her Arizona home. The 84-year-old woman was last seen Saturday night at her residence in Catalina Foothills, north of Tucson, and was reported missing Sunday after failing to attend church.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos says Nancy Guthrie is believed to have been abducted from her home early Sunday while sleeping. No suspect or person of interest has been identified, and authorities remain uncertain whether she was specifically targeted or where she might be located.

Nancy Guthrie faces serious health challenges. She has limited mobility, physical ailments, and requires critical medication that could prove fatal if missed for 24 hours. According to her daughter, she lives in constant pain and has a fragile heart.

Savannah Guthrie and her siblings delivered an emotional video pleaon  Wednesday, begging for their mother's safe return. "We will not rest until we are together again," Savannah stated. The family addressed reports of ransom letters, expressing willingness to communicate but requesting proof of life, given concerns about manipulated voices and images.

The FBI has deployed additional agents and experts to assist local investigators. The Pima County Sheriff's Department is reviewing possible ransom notes, including one received by ABC affiliate KGUN. A briefing is scheduled for Thursday afternoon.

Timeline of Events

The disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, 84, has unfolded rapidly since she was last seen Saturday evening at her home in Catalina Foothills, a quiet residential community north of Tucson, Arizona. When she didn't appear at her regular Sunday church service — something friends say she never missed — concerned parishioners contacted family members, prompting the missing person report.

What Investigators Know So Far

  • Evidence of forced entry: Deputies found signs of a break-in at Guthrie's residence, including damaged door frames and displaced personal items, leading investigators to classify this as a suspected abduction rather than a voluntary disappearance.
  • Vehicle missing: Guthrie's personal vehicle was not at the residence, suggesting she may have been transported in her own car. A description of the vehicle has been distributed to law enforcement agencies across Arizona and neighboring states.
  • Surveillance footage: Investigators are reviewing security camera footage from homes and businesses in the Catalina Foothills area to identify any suspicious activity or unfamiliar vehicles in the neighborhood on Saturday evening.

Community Response

The Pima County Sheriff's Department has organized search teams covering both urban and rural areas surrounding Guthrie's home. Volunteer groups have joined the effort, distributing flyers and canvassing neighborhoods. The search has attracted national attention partly due to the family's public profile — Savannah Guthrie, Nancy's daughter, is one of the most recognized television personalities in the country as co-anchor of NBC's "Today" show.
